My Car Won’t Start

The other day I walked outside, and my car wouldn’t start.

Now listen… the old me would’ve spiraled.

I would’ve panicked, tried to figure out how to wing it, probably called three different people hoping somebody could save the day.

But the new me?

The woman I’ve been becoming?

Sis… she handled it like a G.

I calmly called Triple A.

They came out, told me I needed a new battery.

And without hesitation, I bought it.

I didn’t wait. I didn’t whine. I didn’t wonder if I could afford it.

I decided and I handled it.

And the pride I felt wasn’t just because I had the money…

It was because I didn’t have to call anyone.

Didn’t have to explain.

Didn’t have to plead for help.

I was the help. I was the solution.

Later that day, I went to the laundromat.

And after washing clothes, I caught a glimpse of myself walking out, carrying laundry with one hand and holding my daughter’s hand with the other.

No man.

No backup.

No drama.

Just me.

I looked at my baby girl and said, “Let’s go.”

And as we walked to the car, I felt… good.

Not just good…powerful.

Because I realized

This was me reclaiming my independence.

And moment by moment, choice by choice, I am becoming the woman I’ve prayed to be.
